In 2011 veterans made up 6% of all new entrepreneurs compared to 12% in 2000, according to the Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurial Activity by Veteran Status: 1996-2011. Why the decline? Forty-eight percent (48% ) of veterans leaving military service between 2004 and 2006 participated in the Montgomery GI Bill funding college/trade school education. Although the SBA provides bank loan guarantees to veteran-owned businesses, that only goes so far. Traditional sources of funding continue to be extremely tight. In 2013 the U.S. military will begin a program, Boots to Business, an entrepreneurial program for outgoing service personnel.
